Chapter 1
“Why did you come Simon? Did you want to tell me something?” asked a nonchalant Katie. Katie knew she was right to guess that Simon would come and tell her not to go to St. Martin with Bruno. But she was so tired of chasing and following him around. If he didn’t say he loved her then she was going to walk away and never look back.
“I – I came to tell you that Bruno just wants you for your body,” Simon stuttered. “Please don’t let him take advantage of you!”
“Why do you care?! You never cared before! Why now!”
“Because I care Katie!”
“Yea, you care, but you can never love me right?”
“Katie –“
“No Simon! I’m sick of waiting for YOU to say those three LITTLE WORDS! Look…you have your money! You can finally leave town and be rid of me. This time I won’t follow!” Katie exclaimed. She turned around and walked towards the boarding gate as Simon stared after her dumbstruck. Tears stung her eyes and she finally walked away from the love of her life.
“Wait Katie…I love you…” Simon whispered as she away and out of his life. But it was too late and Simon knew it. He couldn’t believe he didn’t stop her! She was the love of his life, his wife, and he couldn’t even tell her that he loved her.
What was he going to do now? He couldn’t go after her. She had said specifically that it was over! He stupidly walked away towards his boarding gate to Los Angeles, finally on his way to start his so called, “new life.”
“WHY Simon? Why couldn’t you just say it, dammit! Simon…” Katie sobbed hear-brokenly, her face in her hands. She sat next to a sleeping Bruno, who was oblivious to his companion’s distress.
She couldn’t believe him! He was so scared to say he loved her! Why? Because, she, Katie, decided to walk away. She knew she had to get over it. Sitting right next to her was the hottest guy and here she was still pining after a guy who couldn’t even admit he loved her. No! She told herself. She had been heartbroken by Simon and how could this time be possibly different. She finally had to think about herself for once and finally move on.
“Goodbye Simon! Your finally free! And I hope your enjoying it more than I am…”
Chapter 2
Three years later…
“Hey Bruno! I’m home! Where are you?” yelled Katie irritatingly. She couldn’t believe she had actually bought an apartment and let him move in. What was she thinking? Then it dawned on her. That faithful day when she let he who shall not be named go forever. She would never forget that day! Focus Katie, focus! You can’t let him control you…
But you still love him yelled a little voice in her head. Before she could ponder another moment, she felt a slight tap on her shoulder.
“Hey babe…how was work today?” asked Bruno, causing Katie to fully snap out of thinking mode.
“ummm…great Bruno! How was your day?” inquired Katie absently. For some reason, after the last three years with Bruno, every time she thought of Simon, it was so hard to clear his gorgeous image. Stop thinking like that Katie! Admonishing herself was absolutely useless because a tiny voice in the back of her head kept saying Of course he’s a hottie, he’s Simon and your totally in love with the boy!
Shaking her head in an attempt to clear her mind, Katie looked up into Bruno’s eyes, waiting for the beginning of another long monologue by the One the Only, Bruno…
Somewhere in Los Angeles…
Simon sat in behind his big executive desk overlooking the smoggy city of Los Angeles. He couldn’t believe it! He had the money, the fame, the power; he could have anything he wanted, any women he wanted, but all he could think of was were pale, beautiful face with that cute little pout of hers.
Shaking his head, he tried to clear his mind and concentrate on the important business papers in front of him. He would have never imagined that after three long years of financial success that she would still haunt his thoughts, reminding him of his endless stupidity.
“Mr. Fraiser, there’s a phone call for you on line 3,” buzzed his receptionist Kelley. Simon picked up the phone and listened to one of his employees.
“I’m sorry to call at the last minute, Mr. Fraiser. My wife just went into labor with our first child and I’m unable to make the trip to Oakdale later this afternoon. But if you want to come to the office, I’ll be happy to come, but I’ll need to cancel my flight since no one is available to bring my wife to the hospital. I’m very sorry for this inconvenience, Mr. Fraiser.”
“It’s quite alright, Thomas. The flight cancellation won’t be needed. This meeting is quite significant at this time and I’ll find you a replacement or if necessary I’ll make the flight myself. There is no need to come to the office today, Thomas. Why don’t you take a week or two off from work? Be with your family and don’t worry about your job, I’ll personally make sure we find a replacement for you for the time being.”
“Thank you so much, Mr. Fraiser. Once again, I am very sorry for this inconvenience.”
“No problem. Just take care of your family before you come back to work, alright. I’ll see you seen Thomas. Talk to you later. Bye and good luck.” Shaking his head, Simon knew the solution to this new problem. He had to take this business trip. No other employee of his was experienced enough to take the job so pretty much the burden lay on him.
Placing his head in his hands, Simon sighed with frustration. He was going back to Oakdale. Back to Lily, back to the “o so nutty” citizens, and most of all: back to Katie, the one and only woman who could make him weak at the knees. Why? Why now? What if he accidentally bumped into her? Shaking his head in frustration, he grabbed his emergency suitcase and head out the door, back to Oakdale, where he made the biggest mistake of his life.
Back in the lovely city of Oakdale…
Katie walked around town window-shopping for something worth buying, but after looking through 15 stores she hadn’t found anything worth buying except this really cute sparkly-blue nail polish. Then, out of nowhere, she looked into a clothing store and saw on display the most beautiful baby-blue she had ever seen. The design was in perfect taste and seemed to be calling her name. Katie…Katie…Katie…try me on!
Before she could reason with herself she turned around and rushed towards the entrance of the store to get that beautiful dress. Instead of reaching the entrance, however, Katie seemed to run smack-dab into something tall, hard, and extremely warm.
As Simon stepped onto the white sidewalk and stared around him in the bright daylight, he felt a sense of safety, a sense that he was finally home. Walking towards the business building he stared around him, unaware of the small, blond woman rushing towards him. Before he knew it, he ran smack dab into a speeding bullet, almost knocking off balance.
Recovering from his shock, he looked down at the woman he had accidentally bumped into and saw that familiar face that had haunted his thoughts for the last three years.
“Katie…” Simon whispered quietly.
Without looking up, Katie knew exactly who that voice belonged to…
Chapter 3
Later, that evening…
Why? Why hadn't she broken up with Bruno? After meeting Simon and with Bruno's sudden obnoxious and idiotic outburst, Katie had been wracking her brain with hundreds of unsettling questions. The beauty of his face was still imprinted in her mind. It hurt so bad to see him again, but in the past three years, seeing him again once gave her hope to fight on. But her greatest fear lay in the fact that he would probably hurt her again.
Three years had definitely done Simon well. He look as delectable as ever, he was cute and that killer smile could still make her a weak-kneed goo-goo eyed teenager. How much she wanted him to hold her in his strong arms again or just have him close to her again. What she would do to just reach out and caress his face or even just hold his hand. It had haunted her for years and now after seeing him, she knew it was going to start all over again. Damn it Katie! Get yourself together! He's going to hurt you again! Right when you turn around he's gonna whip out the *I still love Lily* crap and your gonna be smack dab on square one again! Hell no! Get it together, not even Simon is worth another three years of freaking living hell --
Determined to rid her mind of Simon, Katie stood up, shook her head, held her head high and walked towards the bathroom door. Ready to move on, Katie was unaware of the picture frame her arm bumped as she walked by, knocking it off onto the tile floor, shattering the delicate glass. Startled, Katie looked down and began picking up the shattered glass. Gently throwing the glass into the nearby wastebasket, Katie picked up the frame, carefully turning it over looking for any lone glass pieces.
But the image that hit her broke her heart. Staring back with smiling faces, was a picture of Simon, Snickers, and herself. Before she knew it, tears began flowing down her face and she began backing up until her back hit the bathroom door. Feeling the floodgates open, Katie slowly slid down the door onto the ground as he hand went limp, and the frame fell to the ground with a clatter. Unable to hold on any longer, she covered her tear-stained face as her frail body wracked with sobs…
Some big Oakdale hotel…
Rubbing his face in frustration, Simon tried to wrap the image from his face. It still baffled him that he could possibly cause so much pain. For the entire day, he had tried the strong vodka, but getting drunk had not been very successful. Her face still haunted his mind, the pain, the exhaustion etched in every curve of her face. He wanted to erase the pain, he wanted to take her in his arms at that one moment and tell her that everything was going to be all right. But he knew that no matter how much he wanted to take it away, it would never justify his actions that faithful day three years ago or to be exact 3 years, 6 months, 8 days, 2 hours, and 35 minutes.
God…he missed her so much. He missed the scent of her hair, the silky touch of her skin. Everything… he missed everything. Her smile on that cute little face, that little smirk she always got when she had a mischievous twinkle in her eye. The little pout she always whipped out when he said no, and knowing he was a big softie, always batted those cute lashes that made him weak in the knees and made him want to take all her dreams and make them come true. Life without Katie Peretti was truly dull and uneventful.
Never in a million years would he admit this, but he even missed her crazy adventures and even her pet rabbit, Snickers. He knew that she didn't want him in her life, but he had to make her see. He had to make her see what she meant to him even after all these years. He needed to see her. Right now. Getting up, Simon began to take a step when the world started to spin. Before he knew it, he collapsed back onto the hotel bed. Maybe he'd go looking for her tomorrow morning when he wouldn't be so disoriented. But most of all he need to see her once more. To tell her. To tell her that he loved her…
