Other Beautiful Things

Title: Those Promised Three Nights

"Ooh, what's with all the lacy things?" Lily asks as she looks at the lingerie strewn across Katie's bed.

"Oh, just a little...deal Simon and I have," Katie replies with stars in her eyes.

"Oh?" Lily's own eyes are amused.

"A little bargain we made while we were locked in that opera house together in Malta."

"Care to share what that might be?"

"Three days in the honeymoon suite at the Plaza..."

"You and Simon?"

Katie gets defensive. "What? You think it won't happen?"

"Hey, I never said that."

Katie fidgets with a lacy something or other and sits down on the bed, her face nearly crestfallen. "Oh, Lily. I'm still so afraid he's going to leave town and I know I can't live without him. I know he loves me. I just can't get him to admit it."

Lily smiles and sits beside her, putting an arm around her in a sisterly manner. "Katie, you and I and Simon shared a lot together when we were trying to find and rescue Holden and Luke. I'm not going to go so far as to say you're sane or not infuriating, but you really do love him. And he knows that. He doesn't doubt it for a minute. He just doesn't think he's worth that love."

"Oh, but Lily! I knew from the start that there was only one man in the world for me and that it's Simon Frasier! If I could only make him see...if I could only make him realize that his place is in Oakdale--with me..."

Seeing that Katie is on the verge of tears, Lily gives her a swift hug. "Simon cares about you, Katie. He really does. More than he'd ever admit. Maybe all he needs is three days in the honeymoon suite." She smiles knowingly and Katie smiles back. Just then a key turns in the lock and Simon walks in, looking surprised at the sight of Lily with her arm around Katie.

"What's this? Have I stepped into some alternate universe?"

"Now, Simon. Katie and I were just having a little girl talk. Ya know, I should probably go now. I told Holden I didn't expect to be long." She gets her bag and heads for the door, turning when she reaches it. "Don't forget what I said Katie," she advises with a wink, then leaves.

"Well, what was that all about?" Simon asks as he walks towards Katie.

"Oh, nothing. Just a little girl talk," Katie dismisses him and continues sorting her lingerie.

"Oh, really? Is that all it was?" Simon notices all the lace and is amused outwardly, though inwardly...uh...touched. "What's all this? Are you planning to seduce someone?"

"They're for this weekend, silly." Katie flushes as she gathers them up and stuffs them in a drawer.

"This weekend, huh?" Simon opens the drawer and pulls out the top to a sexy two-piece. "Some pretty lucky chap's gonna get an eye-full. What's this weekend?" He asks with a twinkle in his eye.

"You know good and well what this weekend is and don't you even think about trying to weasel out of it, mister!"

"Calm down, Katie. I'm only teasing."

"Why do you tease me so much, Simon?"

"I don't know. It's fun to see you all riled up?" He grows serious and walks over to where she stands. "Katie," he says as he places a hand on each of her shoulders, "I told you before we don't have to rush this."

"You ARE trying to weasel out of it! Simon, a deal is a deal--"

"I'm not trying to weasel out of anything, Katie. In fact, I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't looking forward to it--in some way. I must be insane. But Katie, there's no need to hurry it."

"Simon," Katie's voice softens as she wraps her hands around his head and runs her thumbs alongside his face. "Simon, I'd patiently wait forever for you, but you've already told me I don't have that long."

Simon looks into Katie's eyes, unable to think of a reply. Finally he lightly says, "So when do we leave? When do these three days begin?"

"We could go tonight if you want to," Katie invites seductively.

Simon rolls his eyes and lets go of her, walking to the other side of the room. "Oh, you are relentless. Katie, what happens afterwards? After our three days? What do we say? How do we act? Where do we go from there? Do we come back here and just go on as usual? Well?"

"Well, Simon, I suppose that would all depend on you."

"On me?"

"Well, you ARE the one who denies any feelings for me."

"I never said I didn't have feelings--"

"Oh, yeah. Right. I forgot. You do have feelings for me, they're just no different from the feelings you've had for anyone else. I remember now."

Simon laughs lightly. "Yeah. That's it." After a brief silence he asks, "So, were you really planning on wearing those little lacy things?"

"Hmm. I don't know," Katie replies playfully. "Do you want to see me in all those little lacy things, Simon?"

"Well, not all of them at once."

"You know what I meant."

"Yeah, I do."

"You know what I meant, or you want to see me in them?"

"I know what you meant. Although the image I have of you in that little lacy top is not a bad one."

"Well, then, I guess I'll really wear them."

They stare at each other for a moment, both smiling. Then Simon breaks the silence. "Oh, what the hell! Let's start tonight."

"You really mean it?"

"Yeah, why not? I mean, a deal's a deal. We've got to start sometime. Why not tonight?"

"Okay."

"Good." He walks over to her and kisses her forehead lightly. "So, you just set about throwing all you pretty little lacy things in a bag and we'll go."

"I'll only be a minute."

"Well, here we are, darling, the honeymoon suite," Simon announces unnecessarily as they arrive at the door.

"Well, aren't you gonna unlock it?"

Simon turns the key, opens the door and stands aside for Katie to proceed him into the room. But she just stands there. "What are you waiting for, Katie?"

"Aren't you going to carry me across the threshold or something?"

"What? Katie, have you gone completely out of your mind? Wait a minute. I forgot who I was talking to here--"

"Oh, Simon, hush. It wouldn't hurt anything for you to carry me in, now would it?"

Simon rolls his eyes. "Oh, alright. If that's the only way I'm going to get you into this room..." In one swift motion, he lifts her, walks into the room, kicks the door shut behind him and sets her back on her feet, keeping his arms around her. "Well, here we are."

Katie drops her bag and wraps her arms around him. "Yep. Here we are."

"The bed looks comfy. Looks like it's inviting us for a nice restful sleep."

Katie levels her eyes with his. "I did NOT come here for a nice, restful sleep, Simon Frasier."

Simon laughs. "Have you always been this forward, Katie Frasier?"

Katie smiled up at him with stars in her eyes.

"What?" Simon asks.

"You just called me 'Katie Frasier.'"

"Did I? Well, isn't that your name?"

"Yeah. Yeah, it is."

"I think I'm beginning to get used to it, Katie."

"Are you really?"

"Now don't go reading anything into that. My warning to not push your luck still stands."

"I'm not reading anything but this moment, Simon. All I'm thinking about is the here and now--and the next three days, with our room service."

"And our oxygen. Well, what are we waiting for? Three days and time's a-wasting." He pulls her closer to him and presses his lips to hers in a hurried, but passionate kiss. Katie pulls away, laughing.

"Simon, we don't have to rush it. We've got three days."

"And do you propose to spend a couple of them talking about it or what?"

"My, my. Someone who doesn't care is pretty impatient, isn't he?"

"Hell, Katie. You know I want this just as much as you do."

"Well, why don't you just back off for a minute and order some wine or something while I go slip into one of my little lacy things--"

"To hell with your little lacy things, Katie! And I don't want any wine." He begins to unbutton her shirt.

"Oh, and I'd bought this really nice number with the spaghetti straps and all, hoping you'd do that little number with your mouth again--"

"Kathryn Parreti Frasier! Do you want this to happen, or do you want me to go back home?"

"Well, when you give me that ultimatum..." Katie pulls Simon's mouth down to meet hers and they're soon engulfed in a deeply rooted passionate kiss. Through the kiss, fingers find buttons and shirts find the floor. Simon breaks the kiss long enough to scoop Katie into his arms again and carry her to the bed. Lying over her, he smooths her hair back from her face.

"Have I ever told you just how beautiful you are, Katie?"

"No."

"I will...someday...when I find those words." She pulls him down to meet her lips again. He soon pulls apart to let his lips burn scorching kisses across her shoulders and chest. He unfastens her jeans and continues forging the trail along her stomach, his senses absorbing each of her sighs and sharp intakes of breath. His ears and brain buzzed with the awareness of her--of her silky soft skin, her smooth hair, her body, her heart, her soul. He realizes that maybe the first time in that car, the alcohol hadn't been responsible for what happened. Maybe it had been her, and the effect she had on him. And now this was the culmination of all those months of trying to convince her to bestow her affections elsewhere, of trying to tell her he wasn't good enough for her, that she was and deserved so much more than him. Maybe he wasn't right for her financially, or maybe his past wasn't right for her future, but, God, their bodies belonged together...as they were here and now. He did react to her, was affected by her. After all these months they'd wound up here. It could be carnal lust, or it could be...after these three days--hell, after tonight--would he really be able to walk away and live without her? She was under his skin, itching at his bones, running through his veins...

Katie was aware of nothing but the feel of Simon's hot lips on her even hotter skin. It was really happening! Even though he assured her she'd get her three days, there had been a part of her that harbored doubt, thinking he'd find a way out somehow. But there she was and he was and they were. In the honeymoon suite at the Plaza, lying on the bed, half undressed while Simon kissed her bare skin. After all these months of trying to convince him they belonged together, no matter how different their pasts were. After all these months of refuting his notions that he wasn't good enough for her. After all the times she'd followed him, and after he'd followed her. How could either one deny fate? She could here him calling her silly in her head for her thoughts on fate and destiny, but she didn't care what he called her, just so long as he kept kissing her like that...

"Simon," she pants. "Simon."

Reluctantly, he tears himself away from her abdomen. "What is it, Katie?"

"Simon, take me now. Please!"

He meets her eyes. "Are you sure this is what you want?"

"I'm sure if you're sure."

His only reply is the pressure of his lips on hers.

Later in the night, a fire blazes in the fireplace across from the bed, illuminating their silhouettes, casting their larger-than-life shadows against the opposite wall.

Simon lifts his wine glass and clinks it softly against hers. "You are amazing, Katie Frasier," he says softly. "This is truly one of the most wonderful nights of my life."

"Yours, too? I could definitely stand three nights of this," she replies fatalistically as she falls against him. He takes the glass out of her hand and sets them both on the table beside the bed.

"About those three days," he begins as he wraps his arms around her and pulls her close, resting his chin atop her head.

"Yes?" she replies suspiciously.

"Does it have to be three?"

"After that, you're still going to try to weasel out--"

"Calm down, Katie!" he laughs. "Here me out before you go getting all riled up." His tone grows serious. "Remember when you left for that island? I had no idea where you were. All I know was that you were with Henry. That in itself is enough to scare the life out of anyone. Your note was lost and the suite was so...so...empty. At first I thought it would be my perfect opportunity to get out of town. I'd get my money from Craig and leave before you got back. Then I wouldn't have to see you cry, or worse yet, scheme to keep me here. But Craig, naturally, kept delaying in giving me my money and so I'd just sit here at night, in the quiet and the emptiness and wonder where you were. And when I found that bloody note and realized you were off on that island, my first reaction was that I wanted to strangle you so badly for leaving. For being such a fool that you'd go there, not even knowing where it was, or where to look for that diamond, or what was on that island. Maybe most of all, I was worried about you being there with Henry--"

Katie laughs. "You were jealous of Henry?"

"Not jealous. Worried. And I wanted to come for you so badly, but I had no money, and Lily was counting on me because I was the only one who believed that Holden and Luke were still alive. Then Rose promised to give me the money I needed if I helped Lily find them. And so I did. I stayed longer than I should have when all I really wanted to do was find you and yell at you and strangle you and--"

"Kiss me."

"Most of all, kiss you." She lifts her head and he leans down and kisses her long and deeply. "And then when you followed me to Malta. If I'd ever had any doubts on your insanity," he says with a laugh, "that took them all away right there. The way you busted into that room. God, you ARE insane. And then you got locked in jail, then that Dante fellow threatened to kill you...Katie, I tried to tell myself that I rescued you from that island, and got you out of that jail, and protected you from Dante because I'm somehow noble--or at least not completely heartless, but that's not all. Katie, I honestly can't imagine life without you now. Katie, are you sure I'm what you want? Forever?"

"Oh, Simon! Oh, yes! I'm sure!"

"You won't grow tired of me?"

"Never. Simon, I've loved you since we first met. I wanted you to be my first and my only and my last. And I mean that with all of my heart."

"Then let's make it more than three days, Katie Frasier. Let's make it forever."

"Do you mean it, Simon?"

His only reply is a kiss--and the days that follow...

The End
